The Flood of the Bible and the Flood of Gilgamesh The story of Noah’s Ark, as told in the old testament, tells how God punished the world because it had become corrupt. God accomplished this by flooding the world, and annihilating all the creatures upon it, except for Noah and his family and a pair of each type of creature on the earth. Each decade, more insight is gained into the origin of the flood story. Based on the information available at the present time, one could argue that the story of Noah’s Ark was based on the Epic of Gilgamesh. Some example of potential risk includes infections, medication errors and access-related errors (Kliger, 2014). 4.A patient undergoing the dialysis procedure is vulnerable to risk for infection around the catheter site. Other form of risk to patient includes high blood sugar due to use of dextrose in dialysate, abdominal muscle weakening, pericarditis, anemia, low blood pressure and depression. Some patients also have risk of developing amyloidosis when amyloid proteins build up in the kidney organs. Patient should always inform about this form of side-effect to health care provider (Sarnak et al., 2013). 5. Before going to dialysis treatment, the patient needs to prepare for dialysis treatment by creating a vascular access. Vascular access is needed to remove blood from the body and return the blood required by dialyzer. The purpose of vascular access is to allow high blood flow through the dialyzer and this is done mainly by creating an arteriovenous fistula in the arm of patients. Arteriovenous fistula is the best option to maintain blood flow and reduce complication rate in patient (Preparing for Kidney Failure Treatment, 2017). 6.As kidney disease patients require surgical intervention before undergoing dialysis treatment, they have high risk of peri-operative morbidity and mortality rates. The morbidity and mortality rate is high due to fluid and electrolyte issues and bleeding issues. Hyperkalemia is the most frequent complication seen in patients followed by infection, arrhythemias, bleeding and hemodynamic stability. Clotted vascular access ports also increased morbidity of patients and preoperative attention and assessment is needed to manage risk in patients with impaired renal function (Krishnan, 2002). Patient after dialysis may develop risk of increased post-operative hypotension due use of general anesthesia. In some patients, dialysis may be required before anesthesia because post-operative complications occur is given before completion of hemodialysis. Hence time interval from end of dialysis to administration of general anesthesia is critical to avoid post-operative complication like hypotensive events (Deng, Lenart, Applegate, 2014). 7.After dialysis operation, patients need to take iron and folic acid medicines as prescribed by the doctor to make red blood cells. Furthermore, care of the arteriovenous fistula is also important after dialysis operation. Patient needs to clear the skin over the fistula and remove the bandage over it 4-6 hours after dialysis. Patient also needs to check the graft or fistula for signs of infection such as bleeding and swelling. Further precaution needed for care for fistula is to prevent damage to the fistula and avoid wearing tight clothes. After dialysis, patient will have limit potassium, phosphorus and sodium in diet. They also need to control consumption of fluid and consultation from physician is required fluid intake each day (Hemodialysis (Aftercare Instructions)-, 2017). 8.The renal dialysis technicians are responsible for operating the machine and monitor the patient during treatment process. They follow strict operating guidelines and procedure to ensure that to ensure safety of patients. Their effort is to promote effective outcome by assessment of patient vital signs and adjusting fluid removal rate according to patient health status. They also need to be aware of emotional pressure experienced by patients during dialysis procedure to take care of patients. 9.Dialysis nurse needs training and expertise in kidney disease and treatment to make the dialysis process efficient and safe for patients. They have training in all types of dialysis- hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. They are trained in assessment of patient before and after the dialysis procedure to identify signs of infection. Apart from clinical skills, they also require excellent interpersonal skills to work well with inter-professional staff. Some dialysis nurse also specializes in care for elderly or pediatric patients. A dialysis technician requires training in dialysis technology, setting up equipment, patient preparation and operating dialysis machine. They are also trained in monitoring patient and checking their health status before and after dialysis. They need to complete a dialysis technician training program to get knowledge about operation of dialysis equipment, patient care, medical terminology, dialysis principle, anatomy and diagnostic procedures. 10.The operation of the hemodialysis machine needs equipment such as blood pump for unidirectional flow, heparin pump, monitors for arterial and venous line pressure, air bubble detector, safety devices and dialysate temperature regulator. Dialysate helps to remove extra fluid from blood and needle is needed to carry blood to the dialyser and return clean blood back to the body. 11.The hospitals in US performs dialysis on 34 patients every month and 6,50, 000 patients per year are affected by end-stage renal disease in United States (Statistics | The Kidney Project | UCSF, 2017). 12. I would suggest hemodialysis to patients because they do not require participation in treatment and they just need to adhere to specific schedule and session for dialysis three times a week. It also means strict diet and fluid control, however still hemodialysis is advantageous than peritoneal dialysis because peritoneal dialysis has maximum chance of infection due to entry of the bacteria from the peritoneal cavity into the body. Dialysis acts as an artificial kidney by which an arteriovenous access is made on patients arm, leg or neck and the blood is circulated out of the body and cleaned inside the machine to be returned back to the body. Dialysate fluid is required in dialysis machine to remove unwanted waste products from the blood and dialysis machine mixes the dialysate to balance the electrolyte and mineral level in the body. The blood tubing carries the blood from arteriovenous access to the dialyzer and heparin pump is used to release heparin into blood tubing to prevent blood clotting (Hemodialysis 2017). 14.Connection to the dialysis machine is made by creating a fistula or graft in the arms or leg of patient. A blood vessel created in arm called arteriovenous fistula that connects artery to vein. This helps in easier transfer of blood from the vascular access to the machine and then returning back filtered blood. The connection between the vascular access and dialysis machine is made by a needle and the fistula is created four weeks before dialysis to allow the skin to heal. Two needles are inserted into the fistula- one needle removes the blood and transfers to the dialysis machine and the second needle transfers back the filtered blood into the patient body (Dialysis - How it's performed - NHS Choices, 2017). 15.The important components of the dialysis machine are the peristaltic pump, valve and cleaning system. The pump helps in driving higher volume fluids like blood, dialysate and saline to the machine. For low volume fluids like heparin, syringe pump mechanism is useful to prevent blood clotting. Dialyzer and dialysate is also an important component that serves to filter waste from blood through a membrane in the dialyser and dialysate pulld impurities out from the blood through the membrane. Valve is needed to allow mixing proportion ratios and sensors are needed to monitor several parameters such as temperature, pressure, oxygen saturation and dialyzer membrane pressure (The Dialysis Machine Dialysis Technician's Training, 2017). 16.This research project on dialysis machine gave me the idea about the setting up the dialysis machine such as the protocol, supply equipment and the facilities needed to carry out the procedure. The detail on the components and function of dialysis machine helped me gain knowledge regarding how the dialysis technology helps to filter blood of patient with renal disease. Conclusion The research project on dialysis highlighted the details needed to set up a dialysis machine and operate the machine on patients. The key trainings and skills needed by dialysis technician and nurses describes how they play a role in preparing the patient for dialysis, monitoring them during the procedure and teaching them to take care of the patient post dialysis. The world is currently in crisis. The consequences of man’s actions had began to resurface as the environment becomes seriously threatened. Global warming is the immediate concern, as the earth continues to warm up and cause severe changes in climate. There are also other environmental issues to be spoken of: the possible scarcity of land and water, deforestation, pollution and the like. The awareness of these problems have prompted many individuals to do their part: this includes using alternative energy and hybrid cars. However, it seems that the best way to help the environment can be done through the modification of one’s diet. Apparently, the consumption of meat does more damage to the environment than vegetarianism. This research paper aims to discuss the environmental implications of animal agriculture, such as raising animals like cattle, as opposed to growing soybeans. According to the United Nations, â€Å"The livestock sector emerges as one of the top two or three most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global† (qtd. in Freston 1). Raising cattle is part of this sector, along with chickens and pigs (Freston 1). So how is raising cattle, or animal agriculture in general, detrimental to the environment? To begin with, animal agriculture utilizes large areas of land. According to the Keith Akers of the Vegetarian Society of Colorado (VSC). in the United States â€Å"over 90% of all agricultural land is used for livestock agriculture. † In a global scale, of all the agricultural areas throughout the world, â€Å"about 69% is used to as pasture† (Ethical Vegetarian Alternative [EVA]). Therefore, a significant percentage of all the Earth’s surface is used for the purpose of breeding animals for meat consumption (EVA). The demand of land that comes with animal agriculture also results in deforestation (EVA). Because meat production requires more land area, forests have to be converted as agricultural areas. The forests are converted into agricultural land through a slash and burn technique which damages the forest (Freston). These forests are known to absorb the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, but when the trees are burnt, the absorbed carbon dioxide will be released back in the air. The amount of carbon dioxide released through the slash and burn technique outweighs the emission from fossil fuels (Freston). The rain forests transformed into animal agricultural areas also experiences a decrease in the quality of the soil (EVA). Due to the slash and burn method, the nutrients in the soil will eventually be lost and instead of grass, weeds will grow. Regeneration may prove difficult, while fertilizers can only serve as an initial remedy. Because of deforestation, half of all the Amazon meadows have been rendered infertile (EVA). Rain forests are destroyed to accommodate more cattle for grazing (EVA; Akers). It is said that the area of land damaged for this purpose is of the same size as â€Å"seven football fields† (â€Å"Meat†). From the year 1950, millions of hectares of forest land had vanished (EVA). In China, pine forests have been destroyed to accommodate animals and their crop food (â€Å"Meat†). In Brazil alone, land areas equal to the size of 5,000 soccer fields are disappearing at a daily rate. Again, this is because of deforestation to accommodate cattle grazing. As for Central America, the number of cows had increased just as the area for pasture had expanded from 1950 to 1995 (EVA). It is therefore no surprise that the prices for wood products had increased all over the world (Akers). It is merely the result of the growing demand of commodities from a resource that is slowly running out due to deforestation (Akers). Other environmental effects of animal agriculture are soil erosion and desertification (EVA). Animal agriculture is again responsible for soil erosion, which is directly caused by overgrazing of livestock (â€Å"Meat†). Over the last couple of years, numerous mouths and hooves have changed the landscape in more ways than man-made infrastructure such as freeways and strip mines ever did. Grazing per se is not harmful to the environment. In fact, it even has a positive effect on the landscape. However, overgrazing can cause intense erosion which can turn meadows into deserts (EVA). Cattle consumes a significant percentage of the vegetation; in doing so, the soil is damaged because of weight of the cattle. This, along with other factors to consider, enable erosion to occur in which the topsoil is removed. The topsoil is the most fertile layer which was made from rocks and created in a long period of time. It takes many years for the topsoil to be created again. Due to livestock grazing and crop production for livestock, a significant amount of topsoil is lost annually (VSC). As a result of extensive soil erosion, many lands all over the globe is currently undergoing desertification (EVA). Pastures from all over the world have been extremely eroded, which threatens the quantity of existing agricultural land. This posits a problem in a time when the population is continuously growing and food supplies are decreasing (EVA). Animal agriculture also causes the greenhouse effect, which in turn results in global warming (EVA). Gases, which are known as greenhouse gases, retain all the heat the earth accepts from the sun and sends it back to the atmosphere. This is essentially a natural occurrence. However, when the atmospheric levels of those gases increase, the heat will be trapped and the earth will warm up. The high temperature of the earth has negative effects in water levels, ecosystems, agriculture, and most specially, the climate (EVA). Four gases is known to contribute to global warming (EVA). Carbon dioxide is the primary greenhouse gas; other gases include â€Å"methane, halogenic compounds and nitrogen oxide† (EVA). Animal agriculture is responsible for most of the greenhouse emissions; this is because cows, among other animals, release methane in the air (EVA; Akers). Methane is derived from ruminants, such as buffaloes, goats, sheep and of course cows when they digest their food. Also, animal manure contribute to global warming as well (EVA). According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, 16% of global methane emissions come from animal agriculture (qtd. in EVA). Another environmental hazard that animal agriculture presents is eutrophication (EVA). It is characterized by the excessive amount of gases such as potassium, nitrogen and phosphur in the environment; as a result, ecosystems are affected. It posits a danger to biodiversity, water sources, and even soil development. The prime source of eutrophication is animal manure. Manure has metals in it, such as zinc and copper; these metals are added to fodder to enhance growth. The aforementioned elements are then transferred to land through manure, but it can also end up through residue in food intended for humans (EVA). Generally, animal manure is not harmful to the environment (EVA). It can actually used as fertilizers for the soil. However, at present, there is an excess of animal manure that it already presents a dilemma worldwide. Millions of kilograms of manure is created annually, but the space available cannot accommodate that excessive quantity. In Belgium, every kilogram of pork is equal to 16 kilograms of manure. That amount means that tons of both nitrogen and phosphor are released on Belgian soil every year. Such excess cannot be absorbed by the soil, making the heavy metal level in the country particularly high (EVA). Europe is not the only place in the world dealing with such problem. The global pig and poultry industries creates millions of tons of nitrogen yearly (EVA). In the United States, the manure produced by animals exceed that of people. According to the United States Department of Agriculture, 200 milk-cows create the same quantity of nitrates found in the village sewers which is occupied by 5,000 to 10, 000 citizens (qtd. in EVA). Consequently, 22, 000 hens can produce manure which releases an amount of phosphor equal to the manure of 6,000 individuals (EVA). Yet another environmental hazard that is caused by animal agriculture is acidification (EVA). It is caused by excessive amounts of sulfur and nitrogen in land, water, and the atmosphere. Acidification threatens ecosystems; trees die, forests struggle to survive and the quality of plants decreases. Lakes and other bodies of water suffer from this phenomena as well, posing danger to fishes and polluting the water sources. Acidification is best distinguished through acid rain (EVA). Again, animal agriculture plays a crucial part in acidification (EVA). It is the primary cause for such phenomena. So how does raising animals for food cause acid rain? Animal manure emits high levels of ammonia in the atmosphere. Two main contributors of ammonia are cows and pigs. Both animals produce 97% of all the ammonia in the atmosphere. Excessive amounts of ammonia is detrimental to the environment, as it is extremely toxic. Organisms such as reptiles, butterflies, even lichens are threatened by this compound (EVA). Ammonia is derived from the nitrates found in animal manure (EVA). The compound is mostly emitted to the atmosphere, but it can also affect both soil and water. This presents a danger to the human population, as the potable water supply may be contaminated with ammonia. Humans are not the only ones threatened by possible contamination. The fish population is also at risk, as the phosphates and nitrates can contaminate and decrease the quality of their habitat. Hence, manure derived from animal agriculture is responsible for acidification and water pollution due to the compounds found in the manure. If meat consumption is reduced, the methane will also be reduced as it only stays in the atmosphere for about ten years (Freston 2). This reduction will cause the planet to cool (Freston 2). Not only does animal agriculture pollute the waters, it also uses large amounts of it (EVA). In fact, it is the main consumer of sweet water. Water is actually used and abused by the meat industry (Akers). The consumption begins with watering the fodder crops (EVA; â€Å"Meat†). It is followed by the large amounts of water that animals need to drink. Then there is the need for water to maintain the factory farms, the trucks that transport the meat as well as the slaughterhouses (â€Å"Meat†). However, much water, approximately 80%, is also utilized for the creation of meat products (Akers; EVA). Meat processing also consumes too much water. In fact, for a single pound of meat to be produced, 5,000 gallons of water is used. Such great amount of water for such a small piece of meat is proof that the meat industry is wasting such a valuable resource. Compared to meat production, how does vegetarianism affect the environment? In essence, vegetarianism actually does not present any harm to the environment; in fact, it positively affects it. Vegetarianism works in this formula: â€Å" Land + Water = Crops† (Rutherford). There is limited land to be used, just as there is a limited water supply (Rutherford). A small area of land and a ample amount of water could produce a decent amount of crops. Planting of crops can be done in a small farmland; this endeavor does not need extensive territories for production, unlike meat consumption. The water to be used is also not wasted, as it will only be utilized to water the crops. In fact, 1 kilogram of meat uses 100 times the amount of water needed for 1 kilogram of vegetables (EVA). Hence, with limited resources, vegetarianism can be sustained and not endanger the environment. Not only does vegetarianism consider the limitations of natural resources but also it does not add waste that could be detrimental to ecosystems. In addition, the vegetarian lifestyle can actually help the environment. The crops will absorb the carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and turns in into oxygen (Rutherford). Animal agriculture presents more disadvantages in the environment than vegetarianism. To begin with, meat production consumes limited resources that could be utilized for other endeavors. It also releases harmful elements and compounds in the air, soil and water. In the long run, the environment will suffer if this is continued. Students were frustrated by the workload, assessments, and lack of teacher accessibility. They found that lessons focused on information that was not relevant to the AP exam. They pointed to a high workload of busywork with low exam preparation payoff. Assessments were brutally long. Teachers took a long time to get back to students. The general consensus was that no one should take this course. AP Government From the Florida Virtual School This course, again, was disliked for its poor preparation value for the exam. Malcolm X Essay During the 1960’s, the powerful speeches spoken about equality by two men about black empowerment, ultimately lead to them to their deaths. The words spoken by Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X were so strong and influential, helping them gain great audiences and followers. King preached out over the â€Å"brotherhood† among races, and the importance of non-violence. Malcolm X, also advocated for the end to segregation, but emphasized the needs for blacks to become independent of the white man, and stand up for themselves. Both King and Malcolm X had similar goals in their minds, but took distinct paths to attain those goals. Both of their many speeches varied with great distinction. While the content and underlying ideas of the speeches may have different examples and ideas, they both use many common literary devices and rhetorical strategies to attain their audience’s attention. It is through Malcolm X’s use of emotion, together with the use of other strategies, that he ultimately created a more passionate influence on his audience. The early lives that these men lived had much influence on how they would later view racism, and speak out on segregation. Martin Luther King Jr., born Micheal Luther King Jr., was raised with a middle-class family, where his mother and father stressed the importance of obtaining an education (Martin). Malcolm X, born Malcolm Little, came from a place filled with fear and danger, where the â€Å"Klansmen shouted threats and warnings [about how] ‘the good old Christian white people’ were not going to stand for [his] father’s ‘spreading trouble’† (X, Malcolm and 1). Malcolm’s early childhood experiences would be there to haunt him for the rest of his life. The experiences that these men encountered at a young age, planted the seeds to how they would flourish into the voices of the oppressed African-American people, and the ways in which they would deliver their speeches. Malcolm X, was furious at the idea that whites where trying to keep b lacks in their place, and were the reason why equality was still not being achieved. From a young age, Malcolm had suffered the effects of racism, never forgetting his eighth grade teacher telling him that â€Å"[he had] to be realistic about being a nigger. A lawyer- [that was] no realistic goal for a nigger† (X, Malcolm and 38). X, an intelligent student sharing similar dreams as King of becoming a lawyer, where soon shattered, causing him to drop out of school, and turn to drugs in order to get money. After being in jail for six years, Malcolm finally turned to Allah, where he began preaching black supremacy, and the separation between blacks and whites. Martin Luther King Jr.’s most prominent â€Å"I have a Dream† speech is lucid with its use of emotion, and all ­usion. King argues that African-Americans are not free according to the rights outlined in the United-States constitution. King not only presents his argument to the African-American community, but rather to all Americans, white and black. King delivers his argument successfully through his use of ethos. Throughout the speech, King alludes to his Christian morals, speaking out on how, â€Å"one day every valley shall be exalted, and every hill and mountain shall be made low, the rough places will be made plain, and the crooked places will be made straight; and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together† (Luther King). King acknowledges the fact that the majority of his audience believes in Christianity, therefore understanding the allusion to the bible. Finally, King refers to his audience as â€Å"his people.† This implies that King sees his audience equal and also it shows that not only the black people are â€Å"his people.† King presents his argument towards freedom, strategically placing emphasis on his moral authority. Malcolm X, flustered by King’s peaceful approach to obtaining African-American rights, wrote, â€Å"The Ballot or the Bullet,† as a direct response to King’s famous â€Å"I Have a Dream† speech spoken only a month before. Like King, Malcolm appeals to the emotions of his young black audience, stirring them with anger; and simultaneously, striking fear into the minds of his white listeners. Malcolm’s goal for this speech was to persuade his audience to take action into their own hands and bring about a serious long lasting change. â€Å"The Ballot or the Bullet† begins with Malcolm’s attempt to connect with his audience. He begins by greeting both his friends and enemies speaking out, â€Å"I just can’t believe everyone in here is a friend and I don’t want to leave anybody out† (X, Malcolm. Speech). X, immediately grab s the attention of his audience by, identifying with them, also putting aside religious aspects and focusing on simply â€Å"working together and putting aside their differences to fight for their rights† (Critical). As Malcolm continues delivering his speech, his use of repetition keeps his audience aroused with anger. X repeats, â€Å"I am not†¦Ã¢â‚¬  allowing his audience to identify with him, especially when he says that he is â€Å"not an American, but a victim of Americanism† (X, Malcolm. Speech). Here, Malcolm has fallen victim to racism. When X refers to â€Å"Americanism† he refers to things the United States is guilty of, like sexism, racism, and the power that the government has over people. In this quote, he doesnt feel like a citizen of America anymore, although he should. He is equal to everyone else, but is treated otherwise just because he is African-American. The strong and powerful words that these two men spoke out will always be remembered in the history of the civil rights movement. Although King is a heroine in the eyes of the movement, his methods of obtaining a change were very amicable. It was Malcolm X’s strong militant diction, and his power to stir the crowds’ emotions that helped him instill more passion in what he was arguing for. X’s approach may have arisen from his catastrophic childhood, instilling him to speak out on black supremacy, and the liberation from having the government having control over them. Child Abuse and its Prevalence in Modern Society In our day and age when people are busy living their everyday lives, a child is being abused behind a closed door. According to Bryan Calo, supervisor of child protective services, â€Å"Child abuse is if a child’s physical, mental, or emotional condition is impaired. The child’s basic needs are not being met, and they are not being provided a safe environment to live in† (Telephone Interview). Most often children that are abused, whether it is physical, sexual, emotional, or neglect abuse, will keep their home lives to themselves. This is not because the child is embarrassed but usually because he or she is frightened of how the abuser will react toward him or her. Although it is not often shared with friends and even other family members, so it is still not being taken into consideration that it does exist. Unfortunately, child abuse is a real occurrence that happens every day. Children are being beaten, being sexually abused, being spoken poorly too, not being given daily needs, and being rejected by a parent or guardian all the time. Today’s society should be more aware of child abuse because when a situation is reported it helps benefit the child that is suffering by placing him or her in a safer environment (Telephone Interview). (PP) Being able to recognize physical, behavioral, and mental indicators are ways in which today’s society can help prevent child abuse from happening to children all throughout the world. Physical abuse must be prevented in today’s society because children deserve to be in a safe environment. A significant factor when it comes to child abuse is being able to notice indicators that would fall under the category of abuse (What is Child Abuse and Neglect? 5)... ... familiar with. However, child abuse does not only happen to certain children but can occur with both sexes throughout all regions of the world.
